Types of individual appointments

The Hixon Writing Center currently offers three modes for receiving feedback on and support of your writing. Writers can make all three types of appointments by accessing our online schedule.

1. In-person meetings (called "face-to-face" in our schedule) take place in the Hixon Writing Center in the Center for Student Services Building. These meetings involve an in-person conversation about your writing with one of our staff members and can be booked on our main schedule.
2. Remote meetings (called "online" in our schedule) take place in Zoom. These meetings involve an online conversation about your writing with one of our staff members and can be booked on our main schedule.
3. Feedback letters (called "eTutoring" in our schedule) consist of submitting your draft to our schedule and receiving a written feedback letter from a peer tutor. These meetings do not involve a conversation with our staff members. Feedback letters are only offered to undergraduate writers by our undergraduate peer tutors.
Feedback letters have two components: (1) a letter that provides an overview of the strengths and limits of a draft, and (2) marginal notes on the draft itself that offer the writer ideas about where revision may be needed. This kind of feedback works best for drafts that are in the later phases of writing. If you are still in the earlier phases of planning and developing a paper, we recommend a meeting with a tutor.Feedback letters are booked via a separate schedule from in-person and online meetings. Once you are logged in to our online schedule, find the "Schedules" drop-down menu at the top of the page. Select the feedback letter schedule.
Please note that feedback letters are not an editing service--tutors will not make changes or corrections to your writing, but rather will provide you with feedback that allows you to think about and implement changes that make sense to you.

Some of our staff members may only be available by certain modes. For example, the peer tutors who work in evenings or weekends do not offer in-person appointments in our center, since the Center for Student Services is closed at those times. Writing specialists do not offer feedback letters. The schedule will allow you to make every kind of appointment each staff member offers.

You can learn more about the support we offer writers on our individual appointments page and by reading our Frequently Asked Questions.
